So Crazy it Just Might Work: Tasty Salads!
Part of the Get Hawt plan has involved, for at least the past week, eating salads for lunch, largely because otherwise I will just find myself down the street at Victor’s getting nachos for lunch ONCE AGAIN. And as much as I love nachos, I can’t fool even myself into thinking that they really serve as a balanced meal and that their daily consumption fits seamlessly into the Get Hawt plan. I also know that I do need to force myself to eat leafy raw greens on a nearly daily basis.
However, in order for the salad plan to work, I knew I had to find myself some tasty salads nearby, especially since the weather has been so glum. All I want to eat when the weather is cold and grey and drizzly is hot salty crunchy things (see: Nachos), so I figure the best way to ensure that I stick to my salad lunch plan is to find salads that have delicious (and possibly hot, salty, and/or crunch) toppings/ingredients.
So far my favorite is the Pig Salad at South Park Cafe: mixed greens with a creamy mustard vinaigrette dressing, sliced apples, and best of all, these crispety crunchety lardons that if anything are very carnitas-like. I realize that given those ingredients my salad plan may seem flawed to some, but bear in mind my biggest concern is to avoid sugar and complex carbs. And also, so delicious!
I also had an amazing salad yesterday at Osha Thai that I am hell bent on replicating at home. The mango salad had grilled shrimp, fresh mango slivers, toasted cashew nuts, onions, mint, cilantro, kaffir lime leaf, lettuce, all in this fantastic spicy lemongrass dressing. I was literally spooning up dressing into my mouth until D gave me the stink eye. It actually really reminds me of the dressing that Palms Thai, my favorite Thai place when I lived in L.A., would serve on top of their BBQ beef dish with garlic and chili pepper.
More delicious salads to come as I find them!
